SIMILARITY AND SPECIFIC FEATURES IN THE CRIME MOTIVES DEPICTION IN DICKENS’S AND DOSTOEVSKY’S CHARACTERS

Abstract
The article deals with the creative assimilation of the Dickensian motives in the works by Dostoevsky; the parallels between the characters of Raskolnikov and Bradley Headstone are drawn. Based on English Dickensian scholars (N. M. Lary, and G. Gissing) the points of similarity in Raskolnikov’s and Headstone’s moral and psychological background of committing a crime are revealed.
Deep spiritual closeness of views, affinity in sense of purpose of English and Russian writers: propagation of religious compassion as the basis of moral and ethical position, the understanding of reasonable social system based on Christian principles of Love and Compassion are established, and this fact predetermined the similarity in both writers aesthetic search.
