Abstract
In paper the idea of mental students' development is considered from J. Dewey reflexive thinking conception, which was a basis of pedagogical innovation "critical thinking", afterwards it was transformed into idea of metacognitive development. Author marked, under critical thinking teaching in education is mainly understood the metacognitive students' development, which provide conscious internal control of intellection, intellectual resources distribution and studies' results evaluation. Due to the metacognitive level of thinking students are able to realize gaps in actual, conceptual and procedural knowledge and to apply efforts for acquisition and construction a new knowledge.
