Abstract
The temperance movement first gained activity at the state level and at the local level, and the first national anti-alcohol association was called the American society for the promotion of sobriety, and appeared in 1826. In the economic, political and public life of the state the formation of the new middle class took place more actively, which, coupled with the mass use of psychoactive substances had marked a certain moral independence, defying traditional Church sermons and public standards, and with them the political power of the old American aristocracy. As a middle class movement, progressivism sought to preserve economic opportunity and restore social and political democracy to ensure that every American could continue to succeed.
