Abstract
Principles of comity have failed to explain the use of the language by people, especially the polite style that exists in the Japanese language. Principles of courtesy ignore two important aspects of the Japanese language and its use. One neglected aspect is the language choice of the formal structures of various degrees of formality, and the second aspect is the deterministic choice of speaking polite expressions first of all social conventionality, but not the individual strategy of communication. Thus, one needs a more coherent matrix, able to explain the universality of linguistic politeness.
