Abstract
The aim of the article is to study and to justify the choice of the article in phraseological combinations. The cognitive approach to the analysis of complex “article + noun” in phraseology was applied. The paper covers the issue of the semantic presentation of the articles. A study on the material of metaphorical use of nouns confirms the existence of the category of the abstraction - concretization in the English language, the forms of an article being grammatical indicators of this category, to distinguish between such categorical meanings of nouns as contraposition, comparison and discretization.
