Abstract
The semantics of silence in the philosophical and esthetical conception of L. Petrushevskaya The article deals with analyzing the concept of silence and its typology in L. Petrushevskaya's works. The writer considers silence either a sacred act when love is in question or a mauna (looking for the sense of life in a mute meditation). These two types of silence can be approached as an original vow of keeping silent for associating with spiritual values. The other type of silence - the logophoby and its ultimate manifestation of mutism - appears when the characters do not believe the communicative goals can be reached. In all the examples I analyzed, silence is connected to violating interpersonal and social relationships and represents a forced reaction to the communicative default. According to L. Petrushevskaya, a word said to harmonize the relationships results in nothing but increasing the chaos level therein.
