Abstract
The article contains an overview and analysis of several musical pieces of the late XX century, inspired by the whales. Records of humpback whale vocalizations popularized by biologist R.Payne in 1970 are identified as a starting point for the composers creativity. Differences in whales interpretation by various composers are outlined. Several pieces of J. Tavener, Y.Xenakis, A.Hovhanness previously unknown in Russian language studies were described.
