Abstract
The article analyzes how the reform of the 1860s influenced the gender issue in Russia, and as one of famous authors of that time, Prince V. P. Meshchersky, standing on conservative positions, defended the established cultural and ethical norms of women's role in society. The originality of the approach Meshchersky didn’t reseach, because in Soviet times, he seemed as completely retrograde. However, current discussions and a variety of models of women's role in society show that this problem is cyclical in nature, and certain provisions of the public dispute are heard with surprising regularity, and forces us to recall the views of Meshchersky as a contemporary of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky.
