Abstract
The article provides a brief description of the negative characters of the Swedish folklore: maras, vittras, wizards and witches. The author wants to identify the main specifications of these figures, the genesis and the functions they perform. It turns out if the analyzed figures are the exclusive Swedish folk elements or the elements of the global cultural tradition. Another task is to investigate the level of danger that occurs when a person meets the characters of the analyzed type.
